Hi. My name is Linda. I have no idea of my age those numbers just don't compute. My husband and I just moved to Maui a couple of weeks ago so of the course the first thing I thought I had to have was a Ukulele. I play the piano a little and I just like to entertain myself. I have enjoyed your site now I just need to start practicing. At least its easier to move around than the piano. Thank you for your help. I will be coming back to review your site often. Linda

Hi, My name is David here in nor cal mendocino area. I play guitar at church and for fun. I love the aloha of the islands, the people, the ocean, the pace. I stumbled on your site while googling chords for the Ka'au crater boys. My wife and I love their music. The reason I am writing is I am in tears from reading all the posts and replies. I miss hawaii so much. We went for our honeymoon last year only for a short spell. We stayed on the north shore of oahu and same on kauai. Surfed, relaxed, fell in love with it. Hey Brah, You have a really great site. Youve obviously put alot of time into this. Im just beginning to get into the uke. I live in South San Diego and Im excited about learning. Its not coming real easy for me though. I got Jody Kamisatos dvd. I like it because he explains step by step with the song Drop Baby Drop. Thats a great song. I think Im more of a visual learner. I love to sing and eventually Id like to be able to sing and strum together. If you had any advice or tips on where I should start. I saw that you have a playbook-cd set would it be possible to get one. Thanks I appreciate any help. Take care, Heath

Aloha Clint! Your website is awesome! While I was in Kauai in the second half of September I hooked up with a Kumu Ukulele and learned some basics just to see if the Uke is something I might like playing. After one lesson and one week of practice I did a recital for my Kumu by singing and playing Beautiful Kauai. His comment "Bruddha you give me chicken skin!" The long and short of it all is that Im hooked at the ripe ole age of 58! He provided me with the instructional manual he uses for his elementary school Ukulele Band and weve agreed to stay in touch. Next fall Ill be back again for another 2 weeks....we have a timeshare and make Kauai our destination each year. I dont have the background in music you have. In fact outside of attempting the clarinet for one year in the 4th grade I have NOT played an instrument. I do sing. Ive been in a Barbershop Harmony chorus for the past 7 years. Here Ive learned some things about notes and timing but quite frankly most of the learning is from listening to part dominent CDs and singing in an ensemble. I have taken a little music theory through our society so I have a very basic understanding of many of the concepts. Since the visit Ive been cruising the internet for Ukulele related websites. Yours is among the best Ive found...thanks for the work youve done to share your skills. Because Im an audible learner Im looking for things I can read and listen to. Im particularly interested in working on my strumming technique and timing. Eventually I want to be able to pick-strum a song and sing in Hawaiian. Not too ambitious.....yeah? I live in the Sacramento area and have made acquaintance with a Uke player in a local Hula Halau who has offered to do some lessons. My Kumu encouraged me to learn from as many different people as possible but to develop "my style" from what I learn. At some point I would like to hook up with you.......maybe during one of my visits to my stepson in San Diego. In the meantime I would like to find out how I can get a copy of the songbook and the CDs. Mahalo! Chuck

10-13-06,Clint
Glad you finally made it round to showin up here. Lots of tings here for you to use... and I hope you can find da time to look around and use them. I will email you bout da playbook and CDs. 10-12-06,Don Eastman
Sirs....I am 61 years old and still have and play the uke that I bought when I was about 13. It was a cheap model (dont remember what model it was!) but I saved and saved and I finally had the 10 dollars that it cost! I am now in the market to get a new one (tenor) and I want to know what would be the best buy for the money. Im looking to stay under 300 ..just a good quality instrument for the money..you guys got any suggestions? Listen, Im just a poor old retired Arkansas boy who enjoys playing the uke.....can you help me out?

10-12-06,Clint

Clint, Howdy again. Was just checkin in and reading some of the new posts. Here's me with banjolele and grand daughter. Teaching the younguns how to play their own music is most satisfactory. Perhaps I'm just an old lady but by golly there are songs that actually do involve talent, that there MTV is quite awful, it shows the youth that ya dont need skills, just a plastic surgeon and some air brushing. My grandaughters are gettin right good. So when yer folks write to ya and ask ifn they can play, say heck yeah, all ya need is motivation or a rockin grammaw. Always a pleasure to visit yer site.
Sandi - aka blonde hillbilly

10-5-06,Clint
Glad you made it back again grammaw. Good for you on teachin you grankids how to play a real instrument. I kno what you mean about da MTV. When I was small kine, it was MTV. Now it just a bunch of nuthin i tink. And one more ting, you no look like an ol lady to me, sistah. I no rememba my gramma lookin as good as you, so hang in there and keep jammin. Laterz

10-4-06,Frank Conley
For helping me learn my notes. I printed the flash card sheets. Im 64 yrs old. I think you are doing a great job of helping the public like myself learn music reading. I put your site in my favorites. Thanks again, Frank Conley

10-4-06,Clint
Mahalos Frank for da nice words. And I hope you keep me in you favorites for long time, cuz. Laterz. Enjoy

Hi Clint, Congratulations on a pretty neat site. Whats the story with the books with the associated CDs? Let me know I may want to take you up on an offer if it is mutually agreeable. Also I saw your list of artists CDs. I think I like the song choices on the Crater boys the most as I am a mainlander and dont identify too heavily with the Island music (although I think it is pretty). You recommend those boys? I am a beginner on the Uke but have played the guitar, mandolin and banjo so fretting isnt a big issue. I do find it hard to do the fast chord changes cleanly. Any ideas on how to develop a good right hand technique? Enjoy your site and educational tips etc.... havagoodin' (thats the SE USA way of saying aloha) rags

10-2-06,Clint
Good right hand technique? Slow down you playin and think bout how you doin it. Keep you thumb in da middle of da neck when fingerin... Keep you elbow up and you fingers pointed towards da bridge of da instrument so you fingerin straight. Or fly out to LA and take a lesson wid me. Good luck and practice. Aloha (thats da SW USA way of saying aloha) Laterz

10-2-06,Beverly Roe Gagliardi
Hi Clint, Sure enjoyed your webpage. I am in process of making a webpage for our group of seniors who love to Sing a Little - Strum a Long - Smile a Lot, the Ukulele Ladies and Gents of San Antonio, Texas. My name is Beverly Gagliardi and I have been the director of the group for the past 2 years. My sister Joyce Flaugher started the group at our Lions Field Adult Activity Center. When she decided to move on to her first love of Hawaiian Music and her goal of Higher Uke Education, I continued on with our recreational group. We play in parades and at Retirement Centers, nursing homes, etc. whoever calls and says come play for us! We practice weekly and we have a Jam once a month for the folks at Lions Field to sing along, play along, dance along...have fun. I am interested in your play books. I would be happy to pay for them. I would prefer computer copies to printed ones. (I usually have to transpose keys) Cost? Maybe we could trade some songs. We have amassed quite a long list of songs too, and, although we have many of the ones you have, there are still a lot of songs that we have different. We play not only the Hawaiian and oldies, but country western (we just did a Hank Williams Jam) novelties, mountain (we have some banjoleles in the group) but we don't number our pages we have them alphabetically, having separate notebooks for Christmas, Hawaiian, Country Western and Oldies which includes everything else. Let me know if you are interested in some of our songs. I email them to our folks and they print their own. This month we are doing Vaudeville Songs. Our songs are not in the chord chart format that you use because we have a number of baritone players, myself included. Ours are formatted like your Song Book songs with the chords above the words and where possible some timing at least at the end of the line, so we all start together again. We also have made them in very large font for our old eyes and so 2-3 folks can share a music stand encouraging others to join in the fun. I know some folks believe you should learn a few songs very well so you can play them without the books, but it is our belief "so many songs, so little time" and we want to experience as many as we can enjoy. Of course we have old favorites and a recent mixed music gig was oldies.
Thanks for letting me take so much of your time.....Bev Gagliardi

10-2-06,Clint
Sounds like you have a nice group Bev. Mahalos for perpetuating da Hawaiian-ness of da ukulele. ( dat even a word? ) Keep up da good work. I email you bout da playbooks and CDs. Hi. I live in Yorkshire, England. I am learning to play the Hawaiian Uke, the Banjo Uke and the Banjo. I have no friends who play the Uke and I am a 40 year old young lady and have been playing for a few months now. I have a private music teacher. I have wanted to play the Uke for years. I never thought I would be able to read music but I am picking it up. I try and play to my children a little bit each day. I just had to write and let you know that I find your worksheets brilliant. Thank you. Do you have the finger positions for all C Chords on the fretboard? Thank you again and keep up the good work.

9-27-06,Clint
Play little bit every day and enjoy. That what its all about sistah. And yeah, I have all the positions for C you will ever need. Really. Enjoy

9-27-06,Neal
I was introduced to the uke by my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Emma Farden Sharpe, at Kamehameha III Elementary School in Lahaina, Maui. That was in 1957. Hardly played until college...my wife purchased me a beautiful Martin tenor in 1973...it got stolen on my work transfer from Molokai to Kauai. I think its still on Molokai? She then got me a Kamaka tenor in 1975 and I treasure it till this day. My son, living in Hilo, gave a a tenor made of mango wood he made last year. Sound is different from the Kamaka...still beautiful. I kinda just fool around. By finding your website, I think I'll take it more serious...I have alot of song sheets but w-out a musical ear the words-tune is difficult to attain. Anyway keep up the good work..Neal

9-27-06,Clint
Cool. Glad you finally found my site. Lots of things here to help you figure things out. Take you time and look around. Use whatever you can. Enjoy. Laterz cuz

Hey bradduh, I really like the web site. It's pretty cool. I am pretty much self taught playing the ukulele, at times I wish there were other uke players here in the metro Atlanta area but hard for get people together when you work every weekend. Every once in a while my bradduh visits and we jam then, he can play...I play in the first position most of the time, I work at the other positions but only like a few of the chords and the way they sound. I like keep it simple, you know. Now when I go home to Wainiha (on the island of Kauai) I sometimes get the chance to kanikapila. Nothing like playing with the family on the Northshore. But like I said mostly self taught. I have a few songs memorized but you know when you get old not so easy to remember.
I absolutely appreciate what your doing by sharing your love for the ukulele, the islands and obviously the love of just playing. Oh you know what how can I get a hold of of your cds and music books, it would most definitely help this island boy and would be like awesome. Anyway bradduh keep up the good work and no work to hard. I am Earl Phillips and it is my pleasure meeting you. I know it no sound Hawaiian but believe me bradduh I am Hawaiian through and through. Mahalo nui loa. Earl

9-21-06,Sandy McL
Howdy. I still will never forget you as having the best web site for uke beginners. Ya taught me and mine much and no, I did not buy that fancy ass tenor uke as per your advice. I found the love of my life, strummingly speaking. Banjolele. You rock with yer Hawiian stuff. But for one that just wants to sit out on the porch swing in Hillbilly territory, the banjo uke is unbeatable. It also makes for good accompaniment with guitar, baritone uke or pretty much anything. May the music gods continue to bless you. And the folks around here I have taught, via you, thank ya too. Ya ever play the following songs with just a friend?: "Two of Us" by the Beatles, or "Darlin Companion" by June and John Cash, so many more. Keep yer hillbilly friends up on the delights of the ukulele, it aint just for Hawaiians anymore. As always, love yer stuff Sandi aka blonde hillbilly

9-21-06,Clint
Cool Sandy. Glad you keep comin back and checkin things ou here. Banjolele really cool you find a good one that not too bright sounding. Seems the more popular da ukulele keep gettin, the better da companies makin da banjoleles. So good for us, yeah?

richard rochkovsky - 59 - architect - kailua-kona - long time haha - crack me up - "you tak' mystuff, you no sine da guest book?" - haha - wonderful site!! i picked up a guitar a while back and got interested in slack-key, love it - broke a fingernail the other day - pees me off - and got a good deal on a uke at costco - at least it's made of wood. Most of the "stuff" that i took were those diagrams for all of the chords in all of the positions - i haven't been able to find that anywhere else, i used to use the same green template to draw those little triangles and circles, i know what your braddah went through. and of course, the site's sense of humor is very refreshing.
mahalos brah, laters
richard

9-15-06,Clint
Cool. Glad you like da site. You not gonna find any site anywhere else gonna give you all da chordz like dis one either. I get a few emails tellin me tak'em off cause thay droppin da sales of da chord books. Who gonna try sell da chord books wen da chords should be free, yeah? You gonna put out a website and say you wanna help... den you gonna try sell people da chords? Shame on you, yeah? Anyways, cool you printin my stuffs and still sign here. Mahalos to you. Hope you can still come back now and den to look around too. Glad you enjoy my sense of humor bruddah, and yeah, dat free too. Laterz

9-1-06,Jack Ferrante
I really enjoyed reviewing your site! After listening to the music of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole for the past couple months I've become enamored with the ukulele and Iz's singing ability! Just last night I purchased my first ukulele (Hilo baritone) and I'm eagerly awaiting its arrival.. I've played trumpet for many years (4th grade through college) and enjoyed it tremendously. Unfortunately I developed Baal's palsy years ago and it paralyzed the left side of my face for a few months. I have most of the control back but not enough to hold air in my mouth sufficient to play trumpet. My goal is now to funnel the love, energy and experience I have with music into playing the ukulele. Thank you for helping make it all possible by developing your website so well. I've printed off much of the information for use in becoming "the best ukulele player in Silicon Valley"
God 's Best of Blessings to You.

9-1-06,Clint
Glad you found my site. Hope you find the Hilo baritone to be in good shape. Take a few moments and really focus on how easy it is to finger chords on the instrument. Many people find that the instruments "nut" is too high which makes playing difficult. It is an easy fix but first one needs to actually know that THAT is what the problem might be. Hopefully it'll be fine. You'll find also that because you can read music, in time, many more opportunities in style of playing will show themselves. Cool. Mahalo again for signing. I appreciate it. Good luck and Laterz to you.

Clint, I just wanted to let you know your Ukulele Strummer TShirt was a big hit....I picked up 3 of them, one being a gift.. I spoke with my Father in Law concerning whether he was familiar with your group or not and he thinks that maybe you guys had visited his club in Newport Beach.. He belongs to the Oasis Senior Centers Group there in the Fashion Island area.. Anyway, my wife and I had a great time in California visiting him.. He builds and repairs Ukuleles and he gave us an intense 5 day course on building.. We came away with a ton of pictures and lots of knowledge.. Hopefully I will be able to put it all to good use.. He was able to help us out with our playing too.. It really helps to have someone tell you what you may or may not be doing wrong and what you can do to improve. Not much in that way here in Spokane Washington.. Anyway just wanted to say thanks again and God Bless.. Bud Arbuckle Spokane Wa

Ano ai Clint, Howzit brah? I was lucky to recently buy a Tahitian banjo from a cousin of a friend of mine. The seller plays Tahitian banjo with a group on Oahu. I play some ukulele (a four string Mele concert) with two groups here on Maui. Love to have you jam with us when you are next visiting Maui. I am looking for resources on the Tahitian banjo. Do you have any recommendations on tuning the banjo? I attended a Tahitian Fete in Kahului last weekend where two people tried to help me tune the banjo. A local Hawaiian guy said G C E A was wrong and tried to tune the way he plays the banjo. Broke two strings. A Tahitian visitor said the Hawaiian guy was wrong and tried to tune his way. Broke two more strings. No problem - Ive got a big spool of 20lb test fishing line. One website suggested tuning to either A6 D6 Fsharp6 B5 or G6 C6 E6 A5. In order to avoid breaking strings and let them stretch I have been gradually tightening-playing-tightening. I am up to G5 C5 E5 A4 - once octave to go! Do you know any chords that use I begin to practice? Some ukulele chords sound ok e.g. G7 F Am others sound awful e.g. D7.
Do you know of any songbooks for the Tahitian banjo- I would greatly Mahalo your help. My understanding is that the Tahitian banjo is a relatively recent instrument introduced by the group Teava Piti in the Cook Islands in 1990. Mahalo nui loa
John Vogel

8-16-06,Clint
Everybody gonna be breakin you strings you gonna use da fishing line bruddah. You have me rollin ova here... funny stuffs...good story to tell..
Da Tahitian banjo (or Tahitian ukulele) is fairly new for the western ear, and has become quite popular in the past five years or so. Check it out...as far as my research has shown ( along wid all da Tahitian music I have bought and listened to over and over and over... and da Tahitian folks... musicians.. I have spoken to... ) da Tahitian banjo tuned jus like da ukulele, yeah, G C E and A, but one octave higher cuz. Fo realz.
I suggest doin some research and gettin off da fishin string and research da realz strings.
FYI
Hapa jus put out a new jammin CD called "Maui"... has a real Tahitian flavor and you can hear some cool Tahitian banjo jammin all throughout. Cool.
Other than that I kno of no Tahitian banjo books or learning materials. But keep this in mind bruddah, "Tahitian style" jus that... a style, cuz. Do some listenin... find some true tahitian music... CDs..from da islands..Tahiti.. not Hawaiian ukulele... Tahitian ukulele..and listen. youll get it. Barry Flannigan from Hapa did his research and has a great background.. really knows his stuffs. Good place to start. I not worry so much about da D7... try get it tuned first cuz.. Good luck an Laterz

A hoy hoy! Thought Id stick my hand up as a ukulele playa! Im Anthony (otherwise known as the Great Big Hippy) and Im from merry old England. My mate bought a cheap uke about a year ago intending to play it and never got on with it something about having stubby little fingers was his excuse. I used to play guitar but not to any good level due to my inability to look cool whilst hamming up all the classics. I picked it up about 6 months ago and did a quick webby search to find out how to tune and play it.... and havent really put it down since. Ive just bought myself a new concert uke (nothing snazzy about 80 or so of your US "dollars". Im now hitting that point where I want to really improve and start sounding like I can actually play. I think I was inspired by The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain who I sawe at a festival. They did this beautiful cover version of sattilite of love by Lou Reed and I have followed them ever since (not in a creepy way) Im not typing this from outside their house or anything...... I have up until now steered away from traditional uke tunes as they have seemed impossibly difficult but I really want to join a band as I see that as the best way of staying motivated to get better. Most of the stuff I play is covers (stairway to heaven was MADE for the uke I tell ya). Anyways... just thought Id drop in a line... what the possiblility of getting one of yours books and CDs over the atlantic? Cheers and keep groovy!
Anthony

Hi! My mother (turning 88 in Dec.) is starting to make sure we all have things of hers that matter to us. Well, I just received the little Ukulele she received from an admirer in 1940. I think its a nice little ukulele. It is labeled "Johnny Marvin Professional Tenor Ukulele." When I was young I played around with it and learned a few chords but never really tried to do anything that required any real thinking. I'm not sure how much I can accomplish but I would like to try and learn how to play it (simple stuff for the musically challenged). I teach kindergarten on the base at Camp Pendleton - sad times for these little ones, and would like to try and play some simple little tunes. I love the songs in your songbooks especially the way you have written them out but can't find anywhere to order them. So, how do I order one? Thank you for all the time and love you have put into your website, I have really enjoyed my visit. Adrienne Ballwey Fallbrook, CA

Hi Clint! Im trying to find some resources for Uke lessons up here in Central California. My Dad has been into Uke for a few years, just plinking around and annoying my Mom, so its time to find him a teacher. Do you know of anyone? We've formed a nice little collection of Ukes including some Marquesan carved ones from Tahiti (we go down there often, my Mom is from there). I'd like for my Dad to have some real instruction so it can be a pleasure for all of us, and not just him. Any info would be helpful. Mahalo!
Philippe

Tim Daldrup, age 53. Tucson Arizona Been going to the islands for a while. I have played guitar forever. Never thought much of the uke until about two years ago when I heard a guy named Damien play and sing at the Maui Brewery in Kahana on Maui. He played and sang and did some Led Zeppelin and some Hendrix as well as island stuff and I was sold. Came back to Tucson and bought a uke. I just bought my second one last month, a Mele, from the store in Maui. I am hooked. I like your website a lot. I especially like your song lists. Lots of good ideas for tunes to play. Mahalo.

7-24-06,Clint
Cool.. glad you dig da site. Yeah, da uke a great instrument. Enjoy da journey. Mahalo for signin

Clint, You steered me right. I sure appreciate your help. The A D F# B strings were beautiful compared to the ones that came with my uke, tuned up to G C E A and are easier to finger and sound pretty good. But they lose pitch downward gradually, say in 10 minutes or so just like the others. The tightening keys are just like on a guitar, a little worm gear thing that just cant loosen up so I'm stumped as to how they lose pitch so quick unless the strings are just stretching. Anyway I'll work it out somehow, maybe when I get the larger diameter CGEA strings. My wife and I live in a little house surrounded by woods on a hill in an isolated area of Ohio. Whitetail deer and wild turkeys and possums and raccoons visit us all the time and it's beautiful here. If you are ever in this neck of the woods please stop in and have a drink. Thanks again for your help. Jerry and Marie 1025 Indigo Road NW Mineral City OH 44656

7-24-06,Clint
Yeah brah, strings are just stretching.. should stretch for about 3 or 4 days. Just keep playing it.. they'll relax a bit in time. When I stop by I'll bring some carrots and potatos for all that meat you got walking around by your house... cool...
Dinner and uke.....
Jam on...

Charles Wainohu (Parlie) I come from the big islands of Aoteroa (New Zealand) but have been living in Sydney Australia for many years. My sister brought this Mahalo Ukelele to my house and it lay there for two months. I was watching Brother IZ's cd and just picked it up and started to play with him. I came across your web site and got the chords to Sandy Beach - Somewhere over the Rainbow and basically haven't stopped. When my nephews come over they fight over who gets to play it and ask me to show them how to play it. My cousin in Laie, his wife and daughter made two ukelele's they looked and sounded great. I surf Hawaii every year and always get into the music, people and culture...Mahalo..Parlie

7-8-06,Kathie Frano
I think your site is the best uke site on the web. Being an internet junkie, I think I've surfed pretty much all of the general and instructional ukulele sites. Your site is so beautifully organized and user friendly -- I have learned much from you. I also really like the way you've arranged your chord charts... grouping the chords by first position.. second position.. etc.
Anyway... I'd like to inquire about your playbooks.. how to get one.. how much you charge.. etc. I'm making up my own songbooks... collecting songs from the internet.. transposing them into a key this old voice can sing.. but your selection of songs sounds really great and if I could afford it I would like to buy one or both of them. I've recently retired and a year ago I totally splurged and bought a beautiful concert ukulele made by Peter Lieberman.. it's mango wood and sounds delicious! I also bought an less expensive tenor uke (lanikai.. the koa one) because I wanted to play with a low G sometimes. I wish I could afford a really fine tenor but its not in the cards for me. Im self-taught.. so not-so-good but Im sure having fun! Id also like to support your site but at this time I dont have extra money (other than for your songbooks of course). However.. when I first got my ukulele and was frantically ordering all the instruction books-cds I could find.. I accidentally bought two copies of Ralph Shaws DVD "Essential Strums for the Ukulele". Would you have any use for it.. maybe you could sell it or just give it to someone who cant afford to spend money on stuff like this. . . I would be happy to send it to you (no charge of course.. just as a donation). I dont know any other ukulele enthusiasts so its been sitting on my bookshelf in its original shrink-wrapping all lonely and feeling useless...Well.. gotta go now.. havent strummed yet this afternoon...Regards...Kathie

7-8-06,Clint
Glad you found my site sistah...and Mahalos for all the very nice words.. Lots of stuffs here for you to use.. hope you usin it as well.. Lanikai good stuffs.. nice choice..Mahalo for takin da time to talk.. will let you know about da playbooks. Mahalo Kathie.. laterz
