Dear Sir-Madam
I find your website so informative and educational. Last year I took to the Ukulele seriously and although I learned the piano for 8 years it was nice to take up the ukelele. My question is do you have scales below middle C? I am keen in playing open string and the melodies as I know most of my chords. Your website the is the only one that offers scales and I am very grateful for that. I look forward to a favourable reply and thank you so much for a wonderful website. Yours faithfully, Honorina Sihin.

10-14-07,Clint
Thank you for your email. It has touched me as being so sincere. Mahalos. I wish there was a more favorable reply I could send to you at this point. I placed all the scales on my site beginning from middle C due to the fact that most tune their ukes with the C being their lowest string. I wanted to hit the most players that I could with this set of scales. I am sorry I do not have lower scales ... lower than C. The effort it takes to HTML my scales into images ... compared to the amount of people being able to use them ... didn't balance. I hope you are able to find much more on my site for you to use. Mahalos for your kind words and support.

Hi. I am from Malaysia. We do not have any proper shop selling ukuleles. We have ukuleles being sold in the shops but they are all stringed with the wrong types of strings ..I think.. because they sound different from the ones I used to play when I was younger.. even though they are tuned correctly. I think the problem is the type of nylon strings used. Do I use the same type of nylon strings as that of the classical guitars 1st to the 4th string? Please advise. Thanks an regards

10-7-07,Clint
Yes.. you can. When I purchased my Kawika ukuleles they were strung with "Savarez" Alliance Classical Guitar Strings. Nylon. Great sound. He sent me a Low G that was an individual string.. not in a string sleeve.. I don't think it was Savarez.. but it was a low G. So to answer your question.. Yes. I used a 541R, 542R and a 543R. You will have to find the G string. If you do not want a low G.. I think you can just use another 543R. Laterz

Hi, I am learning to play a Ukulele and had recently bought a Washburn OU2 Oscar Schmidt Ukulele. I really would like to purchase a ukuele that actually has the Hawaiian Ukulele sound and this does not. If I replace its strings will it sound any different? Which ukulele would you suggest I should purchase that actually has that Hawaiian sound and is cheap? Thanks ... Sarah

9-27-07,Clint
Loaded question I tink. First ov all.. you lookin for cheap.. forget about any decent sound. Second.. yeah.. strings gonna change you sound a bit.. you ned to fit some strings to match the sound you lookin for.. some brighter.. some darker sound.. depending on da string company.. That said.. I really tink dat Hawaiian sound you lookin for gonna come more from you "style" of playin.. more than da uke. ( unless you playin a dumb banjo uke or a really cheap Hilo uke... den you jus have a bad sound overall )
The Hawaiian sound come from knowin Hawaiian music. I get lots people playing Hawaiian tunes.. wid da poor strummin and bad chordz.. mad they no have Hawaiian sound.. lolo if you ask me.. You need listen to da Hawaiin music.. alot.
A   L   O   T
Da Hawaiian style isn't sumpin you gonna play.. it somethin you understand.. ( deep.. yeah? ) But true. Listen and learn sistah. Buy some discs and listen . I can play da Hawaiian sound on any ukulele... no matter da maker. I understand da style. I listen alot.
Learn about contemporary skankin Hawaiian-Jawaiian music.. the sounds.. da feel.. da beats.. den you understand about da style. Serious.
Spend one or two hundred on a good Lanikai ukulele ( da tool ) den listen to lots Hawaiian music ( da school ).. in time you gonna be okay, sistah.

Yo Clint, wazzup. Long time eh? Had my own web site for awhile... just dont have time for it.. but I still be playin. I know you like the Hawaiin kinda stuff but let folks know that the uke is versitle. I like the banjo uke for playing along with country music. Hubby bought a Mandolin fairly inexpenisve off Ebay... it was a nice one and holds a tune much better than I reckoned. I resturng that there gadget and tuned it like a uke. I aint as good as Bill Monroe but I do kinda alright. I like playing along with Johnny Cash CDs. Turn yer folks on to the fact that ya can do quite a variety of music with a uke. Heck I can play Dead Kennedy songs. Hehehe.. it just totally is a joy. Yers truley,
Sandi aka Blonde Hillbilly

9-26-07,Clint
I say thru all my site nothin you cant play on uke.. I like da instrumental jazz as well as some of da old timey tunes too. Most of all I love da traditional Hawaiian tunes.. but I play "stairway to heaven" just as much as da instrumental classicals. No matter what you gonna play.. as long as you playin. Good to hear from you out there. Long time yeah.. forsure.. jus keep on strummin blondie... until laterz den

9-17-07,Mike

Howz it Clint? Cool site you have here. Im very glad I found it. I was checking out your Ukulele songbook and found the chords of some of the songs Ive been looking for. I also love Hawaiian music and have bought several CDs. I have the Best of Ka'au Crater Boys.. a Best of IZ and three Ekolu albums. I love Hawaiian music so much that Ive decided to learn to play the uke. I dont have any experience playing an instrument so its been challenging.. but Im determined to be very good at it. I want to share the music to all my friends and family as well as others. I was wondering if you have other chords for Ekolus newer albums.. Opihi Pickers.. Three Plus and Ka'au Crater Boys. I would love to learn how to play them on the uke. Thanks for your time and keep up the good work. I will be using your site to learn how to play the uke. Mahalo.

9-5-07,Clint

Thank you so much for all the info on playing the uke. Ive been playing guitar in a Grateful Dead cover band for some years now and kind of started to feel like I needed something new to play with... then along came my grandmothers Kalama pineapple from her first trip in the late 50s. UNREAL. I want to say to you "DA KINE". Mahalo again.

I just got a uke for a gift and im lovin it.. was a guitar player but had a serious injury to my rist and the uke is proving to be good therapy. i have the applause ua10 uke. it has a sweet sound for such a design. if i later want to up to the very best of ukes.. soprano type which would say is the top of the line? im definetly hooked and want the very best. can you give me some insight on this matter? by the way.. your site is wonderful. I love it!! hoping to hear from you soon.. thank you kindly

8-29-07,Clint
Thank you for your kind words. I appreciate it. You bring a deep question. I think Kawika makes the best ukes in the world. Period. I have had the pleasure of owning 2... a 6 string and my 4 string. I sold my 6 string awhile ago. The way I play uke.. the 2 extra strings really got in my way. It was my first 6 string.. and my last. I have found.. through that experience..Im a 4 string player. Sorry.. i ramble sometimes... My favorite ukes to play are my Nahenahes. I have 2. The one that is in the worst shape.. and by far the cheaper one.. is also by far.. my favorite. The company burnt down a few years ago and they are no longer being made. (So much for my uke lifetime guarantees). I know many players who swear by Kamaka (which I dont care for). I have met many traditional Hawaiians who play ukes like Mele and Sonny D.. both good ukes.. but not for me. Finding your uke is something you really need to do. The feel.. the sound.. the look.. all play a part. You need to search for it. My answer... If you want the best in the world? Kawika. Many will disagree. Many. If you want one of the best players.. Nahenahe.. if you find one.. buy it. While youre looking.. play them all.. hear them.. listen to them sing.. touch them.. who knows which is the best today? .. Just know that when you find it.. you will definitely know.
Enjoy the journey, Carmine.

Aloha no.. can you tell me where can i find vamps (e and b and bflat in particular). and other vamps that are prettier than just the basic? Mahalo plenty

8-28-07,Clint
Most books cover the basic 2.5.1 vamp process. Simple and basic.. because most who purchase a book about vamps really want it that way.. simple and NOW. If you really want to learn about alternate progressions and "prettier" vamps.. I recommend looking into a music theory class.. a jazz theory class in particular.. at a local Jr College.. adult school or such. I know.. probably not what you wanted to hear.. but really.. in the long run.. for what you want to be able to do.. thats the way to go. Good luck and Mahalos for signin.

Hi Clint. Excellent site .. youve invested a lot of time and energy into it. Thanks. Ive just started uke lessons in Thousand Oaks .. have had 6 lessons of an eight lesson class at local park an rec. Will probably meet you at Festival in Cerritos in Oct. In the meanwhile Im interested in learning whats involved in purchasing your playbooks and CDs. One at a time will probably be enough to keep me busy for a long time. Im 74 years old and will not be starting a group here. I have some musical knowledge.. play a little piano. Took 3 years of lessons as a kid and can play "by ear" and can read treble and bass staff. Ive found Fleabag book in web archive and have bought several books but see that your selections are very familiar. Regards

8-25-07,Clint
Mahalos for you kind words about my site. I stopped teaching at da Festival for certain reasons Ill keep to myself.. but enjoy da Festival anyways. I will email you bout da CD and playbooks. Mahalos Chuck

Hi. I hope you can be of some help on a uke problem that is a little frustrating. I own two ukes.. one a soprano and the other a concert. I can run through most chords and a good many songs with the soprano. To do this I follow book rules.. that is to support the neck with the thumb of my left hand and work the strings with the balance four fingers. No problems at all. I do my finger positions plus uke support ..with my right arm.. based on the many instruction book suggestions and everything works just fine ... no hangups. That is on the soprano. About two months ago I gave myself a bonus gift and got a concert uke. It is beautiful and has a great sound. Problem is the size change.. my thumb behind the neck of the uke does not supply sufficient support it so that i may properly form many chords ... or ... move easily from one chord to the other. I temporatrily solve the problem by resting the neck of the concert uke on the crook between my thumb and first finger ..... but all of the info I have says that is not the proper way to hold a uke. I bought a strap.. that solved the problem but it is cumbersome uncomfortable unnatural and I dont see any good players using them. Do you have an answer .... is it okay to support the neck in the crook of my left hand. Perhaps there is there a special position I do not know of. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer.

8-24-07,Clint
Dont put da neck in you crook of you fingas. Bad technique gonna hurt you playin.
Make sure you place the thumb on the lower part of the neck. If the NUT of the instrument is not too high.. usually on cheaper ukes.. the chords should finger fine. And you should still hold the uke a bit with your right forearm as you play... that said... understand that you bought a whole new size uke to play.. gonna take some time to get used to the new size. You not gonna just jump onto another size and jam on.. take time to learn THAT instrument like you learned the smaller one. Dont be too quick to give up.. or to get angry and frustrated with it.. give it some good time ... And BTW.. IZ played wid a strap once in awhile.. it may feel unnatural cumbersome and uncomfortable.. but IZ was one damn fine playa...
In time.. you still have problem.. email me again and send me you phone numba.. we talk. Laterz.. and have patience... you on a new instrument.

Aloha and Blessings from the Island of Maui. My 11 year old son Judah is a 6th Grader at Kalama Intermediate school. His favorite class is music. He is learning to play the ukelele and is a natural. Last week his class had a test and he was the only one who passed. He remembered all of the chords and did not stop strumming when going to the next. He loves it. Tomorrow he has a test and needed to remember some new chords. Your page was very helpful Thanks so much for providing this service to our community.

I'm in Brisbane, Australia and have been playing uke since December. I have never played a stringed instrument before and I'm besotted with my uke. My love of the instrument has started something in my family and now 6 of us play. I love this site. I have been trying to find good uke music to listen to and you have provided me with the names of some fantastic artists as well as the words and chords to some of the most requested songs. Thanks for the recommendations, thanks for the music and everyone play at least once a day! Mahalos!

8-18-07,Clint
Nice words from you.. Mahalos. Glad you found da site and like da Songbook pages. Out of all da Hawaiian music I have.. and I have lots.. I think those some of the most important to own. Lots of familiar tunes with a cool island twist. Nice. And good idea about playin once a day. Mahalos for signin from way under there.

Hi there. I am a new player with no experience and just purchased my first ukulele. I love it and can't wait to be able to play it. I also purchased a instructional dvd but am a little disappointed with the songs they teach. I understand I am at the beginning level but the whole reason for me purchasing the ukulele was to play Hawaiian music.. like the luau style upbeat make you feel happy music. Not she'll be coming around the mountain and when the saints go marching in. So my question to you is.. does your sheet music have more of the "Hawaiian" style music? How much is it if I would like to purchase it? Or do you have any recommendations for a beginner? I do have music background.. played the clarinet for 6 years and have an acoustic guitar that I can play intros to songs and some chords. Any type of advice would be greatly appreciated..Thank you for your time and great job on the site.. a lot of great info on it!!

8-16-07,Clint
I understand you frustrations here. Keep in mind da beginning dvd is for beginners. In order to teach a beginner to play ukulele.. you just can't be jumpin into old favorites like "Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai" .. comon cuz... you need teach wid songs people kno like "saints go marchin in" and "comin round da mountain". When I taught my adult music classes I taught wid "Twinkle twinkle little star" in da 12 different keys. Dat way.. you no have to learn a song AND new chordz at da same time. Much harder to do. If you kno da songs.. one less ting to think about wen learnin da new chordz and fingerin techniques and strummin and all that. You already have da music background.. so you need to learn fingerin chords here. Dat what da easy songs for.. Den you can jam on da Hawaiian tunes... yeah? My books have Hawaiian tunes too.. and a nice mix.. see song list on da Playbook pages.. but if you lookin for good pure Hawaiian jams to play wid.. check out my Songbook pages and purchase some Hawaiian CDs to play along wid. There you go. You still wanna Playbook.. lemme kno. Patience cuz... enjoy.. and learn da fingerins wid da easy songs first... cause you no gonna jam da Hawaiian tunes you no kno how finga da instrument...

8-12-07,Leigh
Hi.. I think your site is great and full of great info. But as a total novice trying to work out where to start with a ukelel, I have a couple of questions. What sort of instrument do you recommend for a beginner? Are steel strings a lot better than nylon? I hope these questions are not too silly for you. Thank you for your time. Yours sincerley, Leigh

8-12-07,Clint
Good questions. The size of the uke that you should be looking for is the size that you feel is right for both your hand and finger size. I play a Tenor because I have short .. stubby fingers. The tenor allows more space between the frets for me to finger the correct note and chord. Many folks I know play a Soprano because they have smaller hands and thinner fingers and have no problem fingering the smaller frets of the soprano. All the ukes are tuned the same.. except the Baritone..which is tuned differently.. more like a guitar.. and which you may want to play if you are using the uke as a beginner instrument in order to move into the guitar at a later date. If you are planning to stay with the uke... pick up one of the smaller sizes (Soprano..Concert or Tenor) and see which one your hands like the best.
As far as strings go.. avoid the steel strings on a uke. Too bright and loud for my taste.. and the nylons will be easier for you to control as a beginner.
Enjoy

8-8-07,Jim Pecoraro
Nice site. Im Jim... from Chicago. Learned to play from Ray Kinea at the Hilton Village as a child. I played through my 20s with a hawaiian strumming club here in Chicago... all of the club members except myself are now departed. I recently visited all the islands again deciding to retire my old soprano Kamaka i picked up a new 8 string tenor so after setting my play aside for 25 years i am again playing and trying to revive some old skills! I love your site. Its helping me to refresh my memory! thanks.

8-8-07,Clint

ALOHA! My name is Cheryl. I'm originally from South Padre Island, but currently live in Austin Tx. I go to hawaii every summer since 04 and love it...This year I went to The Big Island (usually we go to Oahu) but The Big Island is where I fell in love.... i fell in love with the Uke. So I bought myself one at the Aloha Ambassadors Music Festival n Na'alehu. Now the big challenge is learning to play it...I love music as so does the rest of my family ...3 brothers that are all musicians... but im the only one that didnt pick up an instrument. Now that im a little older the Uke got my attention and now wish to learn it. If you have any tips or any advise please feel free to email me back. Mahalo for all the helpful tips on this site.

7-28-07,Clint
Tips.. grab a cup coffee and slowly read through da guestbook archives. Good stuffs here. Half da battle already over for you. You admit dat you in love wid dis little instrument. Now you just have to learn about it. How it works inside. How to caress it into sounding jus right for you. You cant force music. You need to understand how to touch da soul of da uke so then da uke can sing for you.. so have patience.. have fun and enjoy da journey. Mahalos for signin too

Yo whats up. Tim McHugh 44yrs old. Just wanted to say i am enjoying the site. I am a long time guitar strummer and a newbie uke strummer but i am lovin it a lot. I have a question for you about your song book. I dont have access to much Uke sheet music. are your song books available to me and if so do they include the chords? I would very much like to get my hands on some new tunes to play. I been messin with the guitar since i was ten or so years old.. never serious but just to amuse myself. it amazes me how time seems to fly when i play. Anyway on about my third or forth trip to hawaii i decided i needed a uke to play with. So i stopped into bounty music store on Kauaii and bought a uke made by island ukelele. beautiful instument. so now i am just starting to learn how to play it and was looking for resources when i found your way cool site. thanks i plan to spend some time here.

7-26-07,Clint
Glad you found da site. I email you bout da playbooks... and yeah.. all chords included for you. I been to da Bounty music in Kauaii as well. Cool. Enjoy da site and enjoy da journey. Laterz

7-23-07,Arnel
Hello there Big Kahuna.. My name is Arnel. Here is my story... I was looking for guitar strings to replace the old ones that was in my Takamine. I ended up looking at guitars and eventually saw the Ukeleles hanging on the wall of the shop. Out of curiosity I asked the gentleman minding the shop if I could take a look at the Ukes and started playing with the strings. I have always been fascinated by the ukes and have watch Jake Shimabukuro played "While my guitar gently weeps" quite a few times on the internet so I decided to venture into the unknown. I just purchased my first Ukelele not too long ago (July 5 2007) and have visited your website quite often for guidance. I know a few songs now and actually liked playing it than my 6 strings now. As a matter of fact I have a gig next month with a few friends and I decided that I will be playing my Uke instead of my 6 strings. I am just a rhythm player and mainly a lead vocal but I am getting so obsessed with playing lead on the Uke that I am actually backing down on the lead vocal duties. However I am having a little problem. I am getting confused with the G string on my uke. it seems an octace high so I tried to tune it an octave down but the strings is a little flimsy and it does not sound right. I have read in your website that you prefer to use a lowered G string on your Tenor Uke. I am just curious if you just tune the G string an octave low or you actually get a lower G string. How do you go about doing that?

7-23-07,Clint
I am sure you already know that the G string on the uke is supposed to be higher than the C and the E string.. yeah? Most guitar players are used to the low to high pitch progressive strings like on the guitar. That said.. if it is too high for you.. replace it. I do use a lower G string.. that is correct. Some uke string sets come with an actual lower.. thicker wound.. G string. Your local music shop should carry some.. if not.. look for a new music shop. You can also go to my links pages.. JUST STRINGS. Either way.. glad you found my site and that it is helpful. Enjoy and good luck

Howzit bra i live here in las vegas, nv. I was born and raised in Ewa beach, HI almost 22 yrs until i moved to the mainland. i neva played one uke before dono how for strum and dono any chords. 7-21-07,Clint
Never too late cuz. Glad you found da site too. Questions... lemme kno. Use da site lots and enjoy da journey.

7-18-07,Jo
Thanks again for having such a delighful and informative web site. My name is Jo and I live in Texas. I haven't played the uke since Freshman year of College. I got into other instruments and let my little uke go. I needed a refresher course because of my age it has been a very long time. I am joining a uke group at church and need all the help I can get. No body can read music. I can and it is a group that wants to get right in and play. I wanted to be refreshed on more than just going for it. Again I thank you...

7-18-07,Clint
Good choice on trying to do more than just getting right in and playing. The uke can be a bit more interesting when you really know what you are doing. Anyone can strum a uke.. takes a more accomplished player to really play the uke. Nothing wrong with just strumming.. but the more you understand the instrument, the more enjoyment it will bring. Thanks for signing... and Enjoy

7-16-07,Barb (C) Satkoski
I found your site while searching for a Martin Ukulele. Nice site by the way. I learned the Uke from a neighbor Mr. T. who use to play in Chicago during the prohibition days. I also learned to play the tipple ...which was also made by Martin.. had 10 strings.. amplified itself.. and played just like a uke. I do not have one as I have never been able to find one. But I to know where the original one is and they won't part with it. My Crestwood Uke fell apart. I taped it...LOL it was not a really expensive one.. I've just had it for years and haven't played for a very long time. I recently started back up and am really getting into it and the Grandkids are lovin it! Thanks for the site! It helped me to brush up. If I get a pic of me playing I will send it. I take it.. Mahalo Nui loa means thank you? so back at ya!

7-16-07,Clint
Glad you found this wonderful instrument again. And really glad you found my site. Thanks for taking the time.. and yeah, Mahalos.

7-11-07,Gary
Hi Clint... Thanks so much! I live in Hong Kong and my sister-in-law got her friends to buy me two and half ukuleles from the Phillipines about a year ago. Id broken another metacarpal on my left hand and the guitar was a bit of a stretch. Id found bits and pieces on fretboard tuning and chords and tunes but you put it together nice n easy. My wife and I are going for a holiday to Malaysia next week and Ill be getting "Stairway to Heaven" down. Cheers again.. dude!

Hello Clint...I am K and G's good friend ... and an educator myself ... who now lives in Rocklin, California ... northeast of Sacramento .... I wrote in your guestbook when K first inspired me to take up the uke in 2003. Your excellent teaching methods have rubbed off on K. We just spent a week together at our nextdoor cabins on Shasta Lake .. practicing "Twinkle Twinkle" with my son.. an expert guitar player. She was so encouraging... I set the uke aside to deal with theater performances and then a huge life upheaval in 2005 when I was laid off from my teaching job and had to relocate to teach in Roseville ...I know... it should have helped me cope ... I wasnt connected yet in spite of making my uke purchase in 2003. BUT... The most important thing is that I am back and all the pieces are fitting .. the uke and I are one. As a singer I have been looking for an instrument.. the uke is it. And the best? I was included in a uke order from Hawaii. K noted that the nutt on my inexpensive.. beginner uke was high.. making it very difficult for me to press my strings properly. She generously let me play her gorgeous koa soprano uke while I was at the lake. WHAT A DIFFERENCE...so I can hardly wait for my new uke. K and G inspired their sisterinlaw P... and G's brother T, to play as well. P will be a recipient of one of the Hawaiian ukes as well! Yipee. This is turning out to be a REALLY long email and all I wanted was to order two of the uke pins ..one in each color.. and the decal. I also want the decal for my car. Can you please advise me. Thank you and keep strumming as I will.
P.S. One of my teaching colleagues also plays the uke.. I want to surprise her with one of the two pins!

Hi there.. I found your wonderful website and it so happens I am neighbors to the Bartlett Center as I live in downtown Torrance. But I getting ahead of myself. To make a long story short.. I very recently fell in love with the Ukulele and am very excited about learning how to play one. I bought one today for 79 dollars at Sam Ash and it was a Brownsville model. My husband tried tuning it for two hours ..he plays guitar and knows how to tune things.. and finally pronounced it a dud. The poor uke sounded awful. Needless to say we returned it for our money back. Can you please give any advice at all about purchasing a decent uke? I have a Mel Bay starter book and want to take lessons and will hopefully learn to play the uke soon.. once I actually own one! At 53 years old I finally discovered the Ukulele... I cant believe it took me this long. Thank you in advance for any advice you might give on buying one.

I recommend you go to Marshalls Music.. right there on Van Ness.. and buy a Lanikai ukulele. Cost you a bit more but a great ukulele thatll last you forever. Easy to tune and easy to play. Tune it there at the store before you leave. Feel it in your hands and strum it a bit before buying it. Listen to it.. hear how it sounds. Let your husband finger and feel some chords. Have him finger some guitar chords to get the feel... all da same... like playing da four bottom strings of da guitar. Then buy it and come to the next Saturday meeting with you uke. and learn..laugh..and strumm.. enjoy
