Used to play a bit many many years ago, but just got a Lehua tenor and have been playing
around with it every day for an hour or so and I have forgotten most of what I used to know.
Having fun and enjoying the Tenor a lot. Thanks for a great site and I hope it will help me
to learn to play once again. Gary.

Hi, I'm Janet from Northern Calif...my husband and I have been taking ukulele
lessons since January. Another couple of players inspired by Izs Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
We're off today for 2 weeks on Oahu and Kauai. In search of that dream uke plus visiting
relatives. Your website is great, so much information! Would like info on how to get
your playbook and cd set...it's hard to play songs when you don't know what they
sound like. Thanks!
6-26-06,Clint
Yeah, Kauai... hope you take the Napi chopper tours.. Air Kauai. Took da tour about 10
years ago. Da Kine sistah. I give dem a free plug here. Charlie was our pilot. DA KINE.
Anyways.. hope you have a great time. Will contact you about the books as well. Laterz
Janet.
6-23-06,Selena
Hey there, I love your website. I am a brand new ukulele owner and I am looking for
music to play. I saw the info about the playbooks (especially the one with the 4 CD set
that goes with the first playbook) and I knew I had to contact you to find out how I can
get them! By the way... I also saw the Visiting... with Huell Howser about the Torrance
Strummers group... which is what got me interested in the ukulele in the first place! I
learned guitar as a youngster and I got Uncle Zac's Bari to Soprano and Back... Ukulele
Chord Chart to help me convert some of my guitar music to ukulele. I got a new Lyon by
Washburn Soprano concert size Koa Wood uke for a good price on eBay. Anyway please get back
to me about the songbooks and CD set. I live in West L.A. and may be coming down to the
South Bay area in the next few weeks to visit my in-laws, so maybe we can meet and I can
get the books from you (if that is convenient for you). Thanks
6-23-06,Clint
Aaahhh.. Huell..yeah.. we had the "Senior Scene" show as well.. lets just take the
credit for both... Mahalos for signin the guestbook. I will contact you about the Books.
Hope the Washburn uke works out for you too...seem to be pretty good ukes as well. Nice.
Keep in touch. Laterz

Your Hawaii 50 portion of the website is great! I was actually looking for a site on the
ukulele and stumbled onto yours. The 50 link was a big bonus!! I only wish I could
find those tracks for myself, or for a ringer! My Samoan mother-in-law is
helping me with my ukulele...we shall see if I ever catch on...
6-17-06,Clint
You'll catch on cuz... not that difficult... When you in those times of wondering
why... just comon back and spend some time wid da great Jack Lord. (He a Irish Rebel
laddy too, yeah?). Peace. Mahalos for signin

Jeff Bradley Age 48. I bought a Mahalo soprano uke about 2 years ago then discovered the
baritone uke. Ive stuck with the baritone for two reasons. One, I like the tone. Two,
because I also play guitar the baritone eliminated the necessity for me to learn two ways to
form the same chord. I played and sang "Youve Got a Friend in Me" by Randy Newman in
a talent show last summer at a mens retreat in Northern California. Last summer a friend of
mine got me a Lanakai acoustic electric baritone for my birthday. We're inseparable.
Every now and then my cousin (who plays wicked guitar) and I accompany my dad when
its his turn to sing at my parents church. The combination of the baritone uke and guitar is
awesome. Right now Im practicing a couple of songs for a musical show the church is having
later this month. Ill be strumming and singing "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" by
Elton John with a guitar backup and "City of New Orleans" by Arlo Guthrie with a
guitar, bass and harmonica backup. This should be a lot of fun!
6-12-06,Clint
Make sure you enjoy these performances, cuz. This is what its all about... makin da
music wid everyone togeda. Cool times...
Mahalos for signin, too.
6-09-06,Patty Harris
Hi, I have been enjoying your website but I dont have a ukulele! Just got back from
a vacation in Hawaii (wonderful, with husband, daughter and son in law) We
gave the son in law a ukulele for his last birthday. I saw a beautiful ukulele at
the Ukulele House at Kings shops in Waikoloa, Hi and they were BEAUTIFUL and they
sounded nice. Nothing in my area here at home comes close. I play piano and would want my
next instrument to sound great also so while I am learning it doesnt sound too bad. I really
want a vibraphone but it is 4,000 dollars and I think I could get a ukulele I love first for
500 or so. I was hoping you could give me some advice. Such as how to find a ukulele I would
love. It would be fun to have a portable instrument in addition to piano. Is it possible
(safe) to order from Hawaii such as the Ukulele House and order one I have never
heard? I was wondering about an 8 string soprano since I will probably be doing mostly
strumming. Dont think I need Koa wood as I hope to play mostly other than Hawaiian music.
But I dont really know…?
Love your website. If I get a ukulele I will be back to it.
Thanks!
6-09-06,Clint
You should never order a uke youve never heard. Kinda like having a child from a man youve
never met.... ok.. not that bad.. but you need to know how it fits under your
fingers when you hold it.. how does it feel... what does the string tension feel like..
how does it strum...hear it.. how does it sound...? Getting ukes through the mail is fine
and most are always shipped packed very well...but...have you done your research and homework...
do you know ahead of time what youre getting? If you want a uke youll love (as you
state) make sure you hear it and play it before you purchase it. If you want one to like..
order away. Good luck.
6-08-06,Stan
Good day Clint, I wonder if you would give me your thoughts on a couple of questions I
have? My Lanikai ST will not hold its tune long at all. Will I be able to buy better
quality tuning nuts to fit my uke? If yes, what make do you recommend and from whom
can I make the purchase? My next question is about instruction books for beginner and
intermediate players. I not really that satisfied with Kimura's books one and two. Do
you have any good ideas and do you use books for your classes which I might purchase?
One thought that came to mind is it possibly to "tune-up" my ukulele to improve
the sound with new strings, etc? I really cant justify a Kawika.
Thanks a lot and good strumming. Aloha.
6-08-06,Clint
Yeah, get new tuners.. there are quite a few on the market and I would say that you might
probably just get a nice pair of Martin tuners. Probably cost you around 20 or so at any
good local music store.. Worth it tho.
The books I use for my classes (my playbooks numba 1 and 2) I do use for
my classes and I do sell. See the Playbooks pages and contact me you need one.
Nuthin beat good lessons from a good jammin local though.. books jus book cuz, yeah?
If it good technique you lookin for, find a local jammer for a few good lessons.
Replacing the strings on your uke will give you different sounds. Some strings will make
you sound louder, softer, brighter... etc. Play around with a few of many types and
dont be afraid to purchase a few types to see which you like da best. Good strings and a
great sound are worth the search. Of course, Kawika or not, you should have a decent
uke to begin with...you put eye liner and lipstick on a pig... it still a pig cuz.
Hope dis helps.. laterz

A quick Mahalo for da info in da site. Like most, just learning my uke. The story behind
it began while teaching in Nanakuli and spending many nights grinding, playing horse
shoes, talking story and listening to others play ukes and guitars. Blah blah blah,
time goes by, leave Hawaii, now in present. Won some cash in a pool, used it to
buy a KoAloha Uke and am on my way to bring a little of the Leeward side to Los Angeles.
Hey brah, there is some Hawaiian stuff going on up here in the valley this weekend,
Northridge I think, a Hawaiian friend of mine at school told me. Come up and check it
out.

Hello! Great site!! I have a cheapie soprano ukulele and am looking to buy a
nice sounding (in tune frets) tenor uke to enjoy sounds on. I am a freelance
classical violin and mandolin player in Chicago. I really want to play the gentle sounds of
the uke. I love the early 1900s songs... I'm looking into a Bruko currently. Whadaya
think? I cant spend tons of money... I love your site! Is it possible to get ahold
of a playbook? I have so many questions... Jory

Hey Clint. I just ran into a pretty neat item. In todays world of technology there is a guy
who wrote a program that runs on your PDA that uses Palm OS. This program will give you the
fingering for chords on a ukulele. This program shows you a fret board like if someone is
looking at you playing the ukulele, but you can get used to that if you used this
program enough. Its a pretty neat program and best of all it is free. The link is below. I
talked to the author and asked him about re-writing the program and turning the fret
board around and he said he might work on that since someone else asked him about this.. Also
his email is on the link page so if anyone finds this useful, he wouldnt mind a postcard
from wherever the user is from.

The first link is for the "local jams" area.....songs done by artists in
Hawaii or songs about Hawaii, the second link is for the "Hawaiian Mele"
traditional Hawaiian songs and then some. Given, some people who posted songs here
either put it in the wrong directory or put song that have nothing to do with Hawaii or
Hawaiian music. Enjoy. I know you and the strummers will find plenty to do here. Aloha.

Nice website! I have been a big fan of IZ for quite some time now and was recently on
Kauai and bought my first ukulele, A kamaka tenor. I love it!! I have been
playing only a couple weeks now and have learned a few songs. My trouble is I have jumping
Jims songbook and Im having trouble knowing when to strum the songs I dont know. so I just
play and practice the cords. Your book looks really cool the way you put the words with the
finger placement. I think I can get it quicker that way. So....How do I get one brah?
A new fan! Leland. PS.. I love taking photos and sharing them. If you like them I can
send more and or full resolution copys! Looks like you did quite a bit of work on your
website and it helps newbies like me! My way of paying it forward! Aloha!

Clint, I'm George from the Garlic capital of the World. Ive been to the Islands a
bunch. Kauai is the best because theres nothing to do and all day to do it. I do keep busy
enough, sitting watching. I was missing my guitar every time I go, jonesing to play.
So my sweet wife says, "Get in the car, were going to the store." She takes
me to this place on the main road (50) in Kalaheo, Scotty's Music
store "Pick out a Ukelele" ...Well, I met my new best friend. I had a ball
figuring out chords and songs all the rest of the trip. Ive taken it into the Mexican desert
with me, played it in the Cabo airport. It travels well. I am so stoked!
Mahalo for your site and your willingness to share.
Keep It UP..George...Come to the Garlic Festival

5-18-06,Dino
Aloha from Hawaii. My name is Dean. I reside on the island of Oahu and I am 40. I used to
play ukulele as a child in the 6th grade but somehow lost interest in playing. I still held
the love of music with me going through middle school and high school band, being a
nightclub Disc Jockey and even singing Hawaiian Falsetto. During my period of singing
Hawaiian Falsetto it had crossed my mind to play the ukulele but never made the move due to
my busy work schedule and raising a Family. Sometime late last year I discoverd my uncle was
making Koa ukuleles so I decided to ask him to make me one. I dont know why. Maybe it was my
mid-life crisis I was going through but he made it and guess what...it stayed in my
closet for couple months. Recently I found out that one my supervisors just recently started
making ukuleles and that one of my coworkers is active in playing music at differnt
locations on this island. Thats all we talk about all day. So it was time my for my
instrument to come out of the closet. Its been rough....sore finger tips to a swollen index
finger to brain farts trying to remember chords.......alzheimers kicking in at 40...
Since my return to playing the ukulele I have actually now acquired 2 more ukuleles for a
total of 3. My first was my homemade 4 string Koa Tenor, the 2nd one is an 8 string
curly Mahoganny Tenor made by Tangi Ukuleles here in Hawaii, and my 3rd is a 6 string
Koa Tenor ukulele with 2 sound holes also made by Tangi Ukuleles (pronounced
TAHN-GEE)...
www.tangiukuleles.com
Tell'em Dean sent you.
Anyway I take my uke to work everyday...whether I get to play or not and make it a point to
play a little everyday. If anyone is interested, here in Hawaii is a website dedicated
to Hawaiian music or music somehow related to hawaii...whether its actually a song in
Hawaiian or sung by someone in Hawaii. Tons of sheet music, most with chords some
without. If you want the site, just send me an email, but I please ask you not to
post any song that has nothing to do with Hawaii. I,ve seen people post lyrics of rap
songs which kind of irritated me. Anyway thats a little about myself. Everyone keep on
strumming. Aloha.
5-18-06,Clint
Good story bruddah.. jus send me da website and I link to it so people no have to email you.
Glad you find my site. Many mahalos for signin.

Hi Clint, One of your strummers gave me your website so I thought I'd look it up. A
big hello to Kerry and Gary Penberthy and how good they look in your photo gallery
picture! Kerry said she'd send me one of her old ukuleles so I could give it a try.
Love that you have chords for beginners on your website, that's way cool. Who

5-13-06,Stewart and Judy Hawkins
Kia Ora bro! My name is Stewart and I am of Maori and Samoan descent from Aotearoa
"The Land of White Cloud" otherwise known as New Zealand. We are down near the
Antarctic. South of Australia. Just another Polynesian bro from way down under! The
ukulele is an instrument that reminds me of the flavour of all things Polynesian. Its a
sound I have grown up with yet never played until recently when I was helping my mother in
law shift house. She had this box and I said "whats in it" and she said "its a
ukulele do you want it"? So I inherited a brand new soprano ukulele a
"Mahalo". I remembered someone had told me years before to tune a ukulele it should
sound like the words my dog has fleas, but I couldnt remember how the tune went. I knew
no chords either. So I did a search like all these other folks and found your site. Its very
cool bro! I especially like the Five-O touch. We used to get that program when I
was a kid here in New Zealand. We all used to run around saying ";book em Dan O".
What a crack up bro to hear the theme to the show again! So thanks bro.
For the site that helps and encourages us fledgling ukulele learner players.

Howzit, I saw your list of songs in the playbook and I was wondering how I could get one.
Im one of those who have been playing the same three songs from high school days. I just took
an ukulele building class and I am going to try to build a couple of my own tenor ukes. I
figured I better learn some songs and maybe one day I can build a better uke. Thanks
5-11-06,Clint
Mahalo for signin bruddah. Lemme kno how your building goes. I may try that one day. Will
let you know about da playbook too. laterz
5-9-06,Dennis Carman
Hello. I have to sign the guest book. Dennis Carman, 58 already!! I lived in
Hawaii during my sophmore and junior year on Kauai. Went to Waimea, Go
Menehunes!! I learned to play the uke from Fred Viquelia. Best player in the world
and he is just too humble. Ive played the uke since but didnt get much better. Now my interest
is renewed and for some reason I have a new hobby of rebuilding ukes, fixing and
refinishing. All started with a Harmony baritone that I got for 10 dollars years ago and had
to glue it together so I could tune and play it. It was bad. Years later I decided to do a
better job and plug the big hole in the side. I did and now it looks like a Martin and plays
almost as well. I have friends in LA and when I stay in California for the winter Im right
next to Torrance. We stay in Hawthorne. So when Im there Ill have to check it out. When Im
there we have a small group of us that play and the women do the hula. And about Hawaii,
its the best, especially when I was there. The people were the best and still are
although sadly things are changing in a way I dont like. thanks for having the website here.
Dennis, da haole boy.

5-8-06,Peter Hastings
Hi there, Peter Hastings in Herts, England here. Spend
my days doing property deals and at tender age of 42 have taken up Uke this year after seeing a
three piece band including Uke at a party. Struggling with the initial chords but getting
there. Your site is the best I have found. The hardest part is tuning (I am not
confident in my ear at all yet) and moving fingers quick enough. The great thing is its
all good fun. You present some heavy stuff in a fun way - cant wait till I can understand
it all. Thanks again and keep up the good stuff. Peter
5-8-06,Clint
Glad you diggin da site. Take your time and if you see anything you think not here, or
you have a question, lemme kno Peter. Mahalo for signin
5-5-06,Robert S. Williams
Hi there, I am enjoying your website and thought I would share my latest creative
effort with you. I just built a Uke that is 20 percent smaller than a soprano... just barely
big enough to play with my hands. It is made from Koa wood and the neck is Southern Cypress
from the swamps here in Arkansas. This is my first attempt at building a musical instrument
and I am quite satisfied with the results... it has a sweet sound that only Koa can produce.
Attached are a few photos of the finished ukulele next to a soprano uke for size reference.
Mahalo.
5-5-06,Clint
Cool uke cuz. Very well done... a bit tiny but i think dat what give it its character,
yeah? It'll look great on my wall, too, lemme kno when finished and I send
to you my address... Awesome. Laterz and Mahalo for signin...

My name is Jyoti. I'm 38 and a half. Looks great your site! I've Just fallen in
love with a tenor uke and bought it. I copied your chords pages hoping that they will get me
started, I would love your song book but I don't do visa or paypall so it might be a
bit complicated. Here in Holland, there's not so many
ukulele players, so don't think I'll find a teacher. But going for it anyway!
sure something will come out and I'll have some fun along the way. My Hawaian is non
existing so I'll greet you with a "dank je wel" (thank you) Jyoti
5-4-06,Clint
Hey cuz, glad you found me from way over there! If you can't find any teachers I

Clint, This is my second e-mail to you. I have been checking out your website and I
have copied some pages for my reference binder. I a rUKEy at the ukulele and learning chords
while trying not to annoy the wife and kids too much. You are clear in your site that it
takes a lot of practice but the rewards are well worth it. So far I'm just clanging
along - but there is a peacefulness in strumming the little uke. It was my father's
and it is atleast 35 years old, a Martin, made in Chicago.
I have been going to Hollis Bakers group. Each Saturday there are about 30 ukulele players
that get together in a grammer school music room. There is also a man who plays electric
bass guitar and another that plays an amplified harmonica. This class is well
established, perhaps 50 percent over 65, some people have been going for 7-8
years. There is a good friendly Hawaiian spirit there.
One Hawaiin man named Herman has been helping me out. He told me that I would fall behind a
lot until I have been playing for a while. So sometimes I'm just strumming to get a feel
for the rhythm of the songs. I am being patient but I would like be able to play something
that sounds right. I have purchased 2 of Jumpin Jims Ukulele Masters (John King and
Herb Ohta). John Kings book has the TAB format that you show on your website. So
I've been plucking Fur Elise and some Greensleeves.
I am interested in your CDs and Playbook. I am thinking that the way that you show the
chords, music and number of strokes may help me get familiar with a few tunes. Have you
done your CD as a solo effort so that it would be easy for a beginner to hear the Ukulele
parts? I have 3 Israel Kamakawiwo'ole CDs and I have a Crater Boys CD coming from
ebay. Also have-
Herb Ohta and Lyle Ritz - A night of Ukulele Jazz
Janet Klein and the Parlor Boys - Put a Flavor to Love

Clint- I have an old Uke that I restrung and have learned a few chords. I have been
amazed with the amount of stuff out there on the net and on CD. I have a couple of IZs
CDs, Herb & Lyles Uke Jazz, Lyle Ritz Plays Jazz Ukulele, Dan "Soybean"
Sawyers Uke of Ages. I love IZs spirit of "Hawaiianess" that he expresses and
invites others into. But as a beginner I have a few books and Im looking for some simple
music theory and youz got it right here! Good stuff, I will print and read and
study. Thank you. I am seaking out a teacher now. I live in Castro Valley, just
southeast of Oakland, that would be next to the real Southbay, but we call it the
Eastbay. Thanks for putting this fun and informational site out there.
3-28-06,Clint
You are welcome, cuz. Be sure to check out the theory link i put on my links page.

Aloha, my name is Alvin Awana. Your site struck me as interesting. I also teach ukulele.
I play a Sonny D and have been playing his ukes since I met him in 1987 (after retiring
from the Air Force). I've taken lessons from Ohta-san and Kahauanu Lake
(about 2 months with each) until Herbert told me it would be better if I learned
music theory so I did that for about 6 years. I also started recording in May 2000, laid
down one track and the next day I suffered a stroke temporarily paralyzing my right side for a
about a year. So things have not been the same and I just teach now (arthritis and
carpal tunnel taking its toll also). Anyway if you're in the neighborhood let me
know.
3-11-06,Clint
Glad you learned da theory but sorry for da stroke. Sucks cuz. Seems like it one thing den
all da sudden it everyting. Good luck wid your journey cuz, it a tough one. Peace.

3-7-06,Bonny
Hi Clint, My name is Bonny, I am 65. I was driving down the street one sunny
day, and on the radio I heard this beautiful song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"
with this soft beautiful strumming in the background. As I listened I felt such a happy warm
feeling. I drove to the closest music store and bought a Ukulele, a "You can Teach
Yourself" book. Found a senior class, joined, then joined another, Loma
Linda Strummers class. Have met the most wonderful people. A few of us started our own
little workshop in Redlands. All that was about a year ago. Just found your site and copied
your chord charts and some of your other most helpful information, have been
strummin, singin and smilin ever since. Thank You so much for sharing your talents.
3-7-06,Clint
Eh Bonny, Mahalos for signin. I enjoy getting da big Mahalos from nice people like you.

Hi, My name is Pat McInnis. I am a 74 year old male (Pat kind of confuses people)
who lives in Scottsdale AZ. We just got back from Oaho a couple of weeks ago. I carried my
Royal Hawaiian Uke around with me while I was there and the locals that looked at it said it
was a beauty. I woo'd my wife with a uke back in 1956 and am still playing for her,
and others around here. I have a set scheduled at the Phoenix folk festival on March 18th
and 19th and am also part of a intro to Uke workshop at the same festival. I also am
webmaster for azfolk.com and have a family page, azmcinnis.com. I love the uke and the

2-27-06,Philip Blackler
G'day !
Just thought I would drop you a line, great website and great help in getting me hooked.
Started on a Banjolele my father in law gave me, a 1924 (ish) by Alvin Keech. It
is difficult to keep in tune but loud and taught me the basics. I have changed to an electric
Risa stick, great when I travel on business, the hotel rooms are my practice places.
Just wondered how I could get a copy of the strummer books one and two? There are no Uke
groups up here
(Brisbane, Australia)
but is getting closer, first Melbourne (MUK),
Then Byron Bay (three hours drive away) maybe next Brisbane.
Mainly use it to sing with friends and entertain the local wildlife here in Australia.
Hooroo!
Philip
