Hi Clint, Love your site and have found it most helpful. I'll explain. 38 years while on the staff at the University of Minnesota they sent me to a conference at Kamehameha Schools. I went back and resigned, sold all my annuities and furniture and moved to Hawaii. Did some sailing around the pacific, some teaching (when I had to) and a month ago I decided it was time to learn to play the uke. I cant afford to take lessons, so your site is my teacher. Mahalo no.
Aloha and a hui hou

Hello, I want to commend you on a terrific site. I knew if I looked hard enough I'd find a great site for Uke education. Many Thanks. I have yet to purchase a uke and just need a little guidance. I do play guitar and am fortunate enough to be able to spend a decent amount on a good uke. Of course Ive heard Iz's music and am wondering what type of uke he generally played, also what brand and generally what your recommendations would be for a beginner. I've actually simulated the uke by using a capo at the 5th fret on a nice Martin guitar for the "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" tune. But still its not a uke. Thank you so much. I've bookmarked your site and believe with your help might just be able to play this wonderful instrument. Take care.
DJ Parker - Jacksonville, Fl

2-18-06,Clint
Glad you found my site DJ. I would recommend a Lanikai for the beginner. Cost you around 200 Kala or so, but last you a long time. IZ played a tenor uke with a low G string. You'll see many people talking about IZ having a weird combo of string configurations... not sure what the hell they base this on so I think they all just talk about what they think they know. I play IZ's Somewhere over the rainbow on my uke and I sound exactly like IZ. It's the strum. That's the secret to the piece. Master the strum and you've mastered the piece. Really. Laterz.

2-16-06,James O'Roark
Got a flea in my ear to learn to play a little music, heard some Cliff Edwards and Iz to hit two ends of the spectrum and figured uke was the way to go. Your site is jammed with great attitude and great info. Now time fo practisin

Eh Brah, you get one terrific site! Dis the mos helpful of dakine sites I been go spak! Mahalo ..... pretty good pidgin too for one haole! I just been learning ukulele since August-September 2005, so I stay in a couple of classes but neither one been teach the basic kind stuff like reading music. They gloss over it and then they teach you different kind strums ..... one of the teacher is one ex-drummer so he luvs to change the tempo and strums and putting in his special "picks" in between ..... fancy but hard for learn. Plus, both guys like us go perform at different events but shame eh? Getting betta though. Eh, I like your stuff and I stay make use, but I need to register from the house ... instead of my work place. I stay in Gardena, CA for now. I like move back but no can right now (original Kauai boy). As why I like the picha of Waimea Canyon. Mahalo for your site. Ed.

2-13-06,Lee King
Hi, I'm Lee King from Manila, Philippines. I really find your website informative. I got interested in playing ukulele when I heard Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's song in the movie 50 First Dates. That sweet, simple and innocent strumming together with that wonderful voice just brought me to tears. It was very heartfelt. That is how I describe his singing and playing the ukulele. And it was such a reprieve from all the pretensious "rocking" that we get nowadays. As a guitarist, I felt that it was time to pick up a new (albeit a relative) instrument. Something that is sweet, simple and innocent. The ukulele. Thank you sir.

2-13-06,Clint
Thank you. Yeah, love dat Kamakawi'wo'ole. Awesome and gentle. Good luck with the uke and glad you found my site. I appreciate you emailin'

Hi, I am a southern California yank who sailed down under. I am currently in the beautiful (rainy) Bay of Islands on the North Island of New Zealand enjoying "summer". A year and a half ago while in Fiji, I started trying to learn to play my old ukulele that had been given to me as a child in the 50s. It's such a nice compact instrument to carry aboard a sailboat. I am totally addicted now and wish I hadn't waited so long to try to play it seriously! Now I have much learning to catch up on and finding this site has been and will be a wonderful help. Thanks for sharing.

2-7-06,Clint
Glad you findin da site helpful Christie. Just got back from Fiji not too long ago. Veerrryyyy nice too. ( whew! ) Mahalos for signin from down under from there. Enjoy da journey in jammin and no worry, you not behind in learnin sistah.

2-5-06,Danielle
Hiya! My name is Danielle and I'm from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. For Christmas this year I received a very nice ukulele. I've never played ukulele before but I have been trying to learn. I already know how to play the guitar so it has been easy for me to understand how to read the music. Anyway up here in Canada not many people play the ukulele (it is very cold and not tropical so its hard to get into the mood sometimes.) This means it is also hard to find music. I saw the list of songs in your playbook and I am very interested in getting a copy if I can. Im moving to Vancouver, B.C. Canada in about 4 weeks so I need to find out if I can get a copy from you before I leave. I love your website! Hope everything is good and let me know if this request is at all possible. Thanks so much! Danielle

2-5-06,Clint
Mahalo for signin da guestbook Danielle. Yeah it cold up there I bet. I gonna email you about gettin da playbook, cause it very possible to get one of these hotcakes, sistah. Laterz

Hi Clint,
Just found your awesome site. I have a Tahitian Uke that I got on Bora Bora a few years ago and I've really enjoyed playing it. I spent most of my vacation jamming till the wee hours with some of the local guys. I wanted to learn Tahitian songs and they wanted to learn American songs. It was a blast! I want to expand my repertoire and I would be very interested in your cd set. I was wondering how much it would cost? I live just outside of the little island of Manhattan, in Weehawken, NJ and I would love to get a group of friends together to play ukulele songs. That sounds like so much fun. Next time Im in the LA area Id love to come by and sit in on a Saturday with you guys if thats okay.

Hello and happy strumming!
Have just looked at your website for the first time today. A fellow musician told me about it so I will try to use some of your stuff! I am a displaced Nova Scotian from Canada and spend my winters in Fl. Have been playing uke for many years and have taught at the elementary level in schools until retirement. I play a hand made tenor uke (Hawaiian shape) most of the time but also use a JCD 3 a great deal. Don't know if you are familiar with J Chalmers Doane from Halifax, NS who designed the triangle uke and has done many years of educational workshops in Hawaii as well as in Canada. I have played in a group which he conducted for many years and now use my uke to play with local jammin' friends. We live in an area here where there is plenty of opportunity to play music all day, every day. I just came home from a small jam session of about 7 guitar players (mostly Martins) and a couple of mandolins. We sit in a circle and take turns singing or playing a piece. Keeps us in good practice.
Good luck with your uke collection.
Glenna in Florida

1-6-06,Jerry Lopes
Hi Clint - I've been playing uke for quite a few years. I started while in the service in '59. Spent a year in the Orient where ukes were inexpensive ( 5 bucks to 10 bucks ) for something decent. We made a trip to Kauai last May where I picked up a six string, electric Lanikai. I was so impressed with the sound that it's been hard to put down. For Christmas the wife bought me a Roland Micro Cube amplifier. I am now in "7th Heaven" - I was 65 last April and this has become a real nice retirement hobby. I need to learn more about music. I play the guitar and the baritone a bit so have been reluctant to call the chord configurations something other on the tenor uke. I have been collecting music using "Paint" to draw the chords, then converting them for friends to play on the guitar mandolin or ?? I've gotten into a real mess with transposing. I need to learn the names of the tenor cords and begin using them properly. I'm starting a beginners piano class on the 15th. Hope this will get me through these problems. Loved your ukulelestrummers site. I'll be visiting it often. Thanks - Jerry Lopes

1-6-06,Clint
Glad you found da site, cuz. You get in class letem kno bout dis site, yeah? You got questions lemme kno, I try to help you. Good luck and have fun. Later Jerry.

Aloha, my name is Brandon. im from Hawaii and lived in northern cali since i was 7 but now i make my home in phoenix. i've always have had an interest in playing the ukulele since my grandpa started to teach me when i was about 10 (i knew a lot more then than i do now.) but because he was in hawaii and i was in cali the lessons was few and far between. just recently i've gotten the bug again. i play at home but i know about 5 notes that i put together to make it sound half decent. well to get to the point i'm interested in the playbooks that u have on your website. i have some books but i know and like most of the songs u have on your list. Mahalo nui loa.

Clint, I am completely in love with the uke and my wife got me one for our anniversary, however we live in New Hampshire. NH is not exactly the sophistication capitol of the world and I've already been made fun of for even having a uke. We are in the process of selling our house and moving to Phoenix, so, do you have any groups in Phoenix I can hook up with? My wife got me a starter uke (Hilo), because it was the only one she could find for miles. No matter, it works and I'm ready to get going. Any help would be appreciated and I look forward to meeting you some time, as uke brothers. Aloha.

12-31-05,Clint
Eh Jeff... I wish I was the ukulele group puppet master... but not so much friend. I would just recommend you sign da Network and start to network yourself. Keep playin, you'll improve and all your friends will be sorry they made fun of you. Check out all da good information on my site, practice well and have patience. If you have questions, lemme kno. Mahalos and good luck. You ever in L.A. look me up.

I wonder if everyone feels the same about the Hawaiian Islands after they have visited there. I know my life has not been the same since my first visit in 1994. I found a part inside of me I thought did not exist after my battle with PTSD from Vietnam. I have been to your islands 8 more times and will be returning in May this year. I fell in love with Kauai and with how quiet and peaceful it can be at certain times of the year. I have been to Hawaii on two of the trips and your island is so different from the others it's hard to explain to those who have not had the experience. I have had the time to visit all of the islands and each island has its own beauty and way of showing you something you have not seen before. The constant always is the Hawaiian people who have found a way of life that is so much simpler and understanding than the life style we live on the mainland. I know if possible that sometime in the future mine will include a portion of my retirement spent in the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. Early in my life I sang and always enjoyed doing it for others too. Unfortunately I lost that love with many others and until recently felt I should use the gift I had been given. Recently I began the love affair with the Ukulele and trying to learn as much as possible and of course as fast as possible. As you mentioned you should play at least one time a day and I have been trying to do this and sometimes it really does not sound too bad and then the next day it really stinks. I am always looking for suggestions and techniques and looking for that sound that only comes from the Ukulele in a person's hands and fingers who really enjoys and know how to play it. Thanks for your web site and most of all thanks for the hospitality that always seems to be a large part of the time I am able to spend in your home and find that peace everyone is looking for. Leidonnie

12-29-05,Clint
Sounds like you doin it right cuz. Play everyday and understand what playin da ukulele is really all about. It not about how good you gonna play or how fast. It about pure enjoyment my friend. Peace and soft island music. Dat it. Nuthin more. Continue your love affair and enjoy what it bring to you....and of course, share your gift.

Dude, Fantastic web site - just bought my wife a uke for Christmas (she's been playing guitar for years) and couldn't find a single decent book in the shops about how to play it. One web search later and I've got everything I need for her to start, courtesy of you. The UK's a long way from Hawaii, but we'll have a little taste anyway once we're playing. No grass skirt til the summer though! This is what the web was designed for - thank you for an excellent site. Have a great new year Darren (London)

12-24-05,Clint
Mahalos for da kine words, cuz. Glad you found my site and dig it... and all da way from London... cool...have a Happy New Year too...

12-18-05,Gary Peterson
Clint - I called you a few days ago and you referred me to your website - thanks, this is very helpful. I am wondering which takes longer - learning how to play the ukulele or learning to write-talk Hawaiian English? On the phone I had asked you if you know of a ukulele teacher in the Pasadena area. Anyway, my story is more complicated. I am living-working in Tokyo - been here for the last 6 years, and will likely be here for another 2 before moving back to LA. I kept my home in the Pasadena area (my son lives there) and will be arriving there this Saturday for 3 weeks. If possible I would like to get together with you to cram as much private lessons in as would be reasonable. (I am still looking for a good uke teacher in Tokyo.) I only bought a ukulele (Koaloha) 2 weeks ago while in Hawaii, together with Jumpin Jims Ukulele Tips N Tunes by Jim Beloff. I've learned the basic chords used in the book (the major, minor, 7th, minor 7th, and dimished) and most of the songs in that book. I'm not sure where to go from here - there are always more books to get and more songs to sing using these chords (I want to talk to you about your playbooks as well) but I think I am missing something. I have also ordered Ralph Shaws "The Complete Ukulele Course taught by Ralph Shaw" and "Essential Strums for the Ukulele". They should be delivered to me during this trip. While in grade school (many decades ago) I taught myself to play guitar (chords). Earlier, I had a few years of piano lessons (I also banged on the drums in a high school rock band) - this is the extent of my music education. So as I said, I will be in LA from Dec 24 to Jan 13. I'm not sure my schedule yet (our other kids are coming down to visit us as well) but wanted to inquire as to what yours was so I could try to meet you to get direction on what to focus on, how to study, etc. I hope to continue lessons in Tokyo if I can find the right resource. My home telephone is xxx-xxx-xxxx (I fly in on Saturday) but email always works for me. Please let me know if we can get together at all. Thanks. Gary Peterson

Hi Clint, My wife Vanessa and I just returned from a trip to the south Caribbean, where she is from (born and raised in Trinidad off the coast of Venezuela, and her father is from Barbados). Well we couldnt take our usual banjo-guitar combination so we sprung for the cheapy ukuleles at the local music store and off we went to visit the folks. We had such a ball!! Carryin the sound to these "other islands". We were sailing with her Dad "up the islands" playin it all up on deck... We made up more new verses to "Dont worry, Be Happy" than youd like to hear and laughed all the way. And had a great time figuring out chord progressions. We have a long way to go but found that the ukes just invited us to be funny and play and enjoy the sharing of music anytime. Before we went we found your website and really like it. It is de bes! Watch out nah or I start to speak Trini at you and you tink I de fus mahn to write you from down dat way! If! I still learnin from de wife on dat but de sistuhs say I not doin so so bad. We happy to make a site contribution to support and spread de love - We really appreciatin what you doin for good music! We have only one "Iz" CD now but Christmas promises to expand our collection. Thanks for all the good guidance.

Aloha Clint! Mucho mahalos for da ono kine ukesite! I've been playing for a little over a year, after fumbling around on guitars for many years ( still play the old Stratocaster alot). I'm here on the big island of Oregon, village of Milwaukie, near Portland. Got interested in the uke after seeing one lolo buggah play Purple Haze on da uke on TV and thought hmmmm, I better checkem out, yah? My first uke was-is a Lanikai tenor (can't remember the model number) and my current love is a Bushman Jenny tenor. Like you I suffer from collectoritis, so I better be careful or Im liable to end up in some sort of 12 step program for recovering ukulele players! I am also a proud member of the Portland Ukulele Assn. having found out about it just a few weeks ago. Your website has answered many of my questions about music theory and having played clarinet and oboe in a previous lifetime hasn't hurt either. Anybody out there in cyberspace live near Milwaukie OR want to get together and jam drop me a line at shawndougherty53@yahoo.com
Ukulele noka oi! Peace.

Cool Shawn. Gonna email you see if you can sign up da Network page bruddah. You can get a link there. Glad you dig da site too. Lotta work, but you know, it Christmas season cuz...

Hi Clint The 4 CD's arrived safely yesterday morning. Verdict? "Fantastic". Great voices too - both solo and duet. Thank you Clint for the time and the trouble you have taken in preparing the CDs and the printed music song sheets that all link up so neatly together. For me, starting late in life on the Uke and learning on my own it is an ideal method of learning and one I would recommend to anyone in a similar situation to myself. Being able to hear the songs on the CDs is an added bonus and a very valuable learning aid. I knew about 80 % of the songs, but there are many delightful ones that are totally new to me. Give My Regards To Broadway struck a particular note today as we sent off some flowers by Interflora to the Marquis Theatre on Broadway where my wife's niece Maria Friedman is opening tomorrow night with Michael Ball in The Woman in White. She was previously in the London production of the show Who knows - now with your help and my new found ukulele skills I could be getting a call to Times Square any time !!! I wish!!!
Clint .. Bless you and Thank You Kindest regards
Alan Jones (Devon, England)

Aloha e Clint, I happened to stumble upon your website as I was looking for help on chords for "Little Brown Gal." I'm very interested in starting a strummers group but I'm not that great of a player. In fact I've never had any formal training. All I've learned was by watching my relatives. I grew up dancing in my uncle's polynesian group only to end up (after having 5 bebes), as a dance instructor and was thrown into the band. Now that I've moved with my own family out of state, away from my uncle, I've branched out with our polynesian dance group here. My poor students have to suffer listening to me sing and and playing the uke for most of our Hawaiian and Maori sections. So any help in this department would be greatly appreciated. A few months back I went to another site that had listings of uke players in my county and 2 came up. Both players do not offer lessons. (sigh) Thus, here I am, stuck. I am very interested in your ukulele strummers playbook (and CDs). Also, do you offer any lesson books on playing the Tahitian banjo? And how is the Tahitian banjo played? Mahalo a nui, Lia

Cool Lia, I gonna email you bout da Tahitian styles and da Playbook and CDs. Many Mahalos for checkin ou my site, sistah...

Aloha! My name is Lori Kahikina-Moniz. My dad is an excellent ukulele player but I never showed interest in the ukulele until recently (I'm 34) when my 9 year old son took lessons at school. His father played with Gabby but he passed away before I was even born. My son is doing a report on ukuleles and I figured I would do some research on the internet and your website popped up. I was so happy with all of the information you posted on it!! When I first started playing a couple of months ago I tried searching on the web for a website that could show me how to play the basic notes and have a few songs with the chords placed above the words. Your website didn't come up until I did another search today. You provided exactly what I was looking for a couple of months ago. MAHALO, MAHALO, MAHALO!! I'm going to print out all of your pages and put them in a folder so I can learn and practice. I was wondering if it would be possible to obtain a copy of your Playbook? I can't wait to try your new strumming methods and find one that fits my style. My father uses a combination of his index finger and thumb. I seem to be comfortable with that method but the ones you mentioned also sound interesting. I look forward to hearing from you soon! Again, thank you for your website. I have already added it to my "favorites"

I have a question. I just acquired a ukulele, and it is a Harmony about 30 years old in great shape. I believe it is a baritone uke because it is larger. I dont know how to play but want to learn. I read what you said about tuning a baritone uke differently that the 3 other types. If it is tuned differently then what chords are used? All the chords shown on your site are for the other tuning other than for the baritone uke. How do I find chords for the baritone tuning?... surely chords must be played differently since it is tuned to different notes, right? Again how do I tell if I have a baritone uke? and if I do can it be tuned like the other three types of ukes, or does it have to be tuned differently...why is there a difference? Actually that turned out to be more than one more question...sorry!

A question?... sheesh sistah.... a load of'em.... dats ok tho... hang on..here we go...
Da baritone is tuned a fifth lower (or a fourth higher) than da other ukes due to its size difference. It cannot be tuned like the other ukes... safely. It uses da same chord patterns but da chords are named differently. I wrote my site to da other GCEA ukes... if you want bari stuff try Howlin Hobbit and his website. (I think Howlinhobbit.com)..... he is a bari player and has focused his site towards that instrument. Mel Bay has some ukulele books just for da Bari. Check ou you local music hut. Good luck Debbie. Enjoy da journey.

Hiya Clint I enjoy your site. I printed your chord charts, hope that is OK with you, it has been most helpful. I still got alot to learn can play the majors and some of the 7s without having to peek. I've had my ukulele for 8 days now, have learned to pick out a few songs. Basic stuff, You Are My Sunshine, Jingle Bells, Bad Moon Rising, and a few others. Generally I use D, G, C and a chord I invented out of necessity, which is just strumming only the G string for the lowest chord. These are all first position chords. Question, should I play an octave higher to allow for lower notes? I was making a kinda lame attempt at playing with some Simon & Garfunkle. And wasnt doing too bad on a couple of songs, Slip Sliding Away and I Would If I Could...you know the one, I'd rather be a hammer than a nail etc. I have a bit of an ear for music but no official training. I taught myself autoharp, harmonica and am half decent on the keyboard. I reckon my question is I think I found something that works but I wanna learn to play correctly. Seems alot of the music I like uses D G C, can you suggest some more chords that will work with this or recommend a book? Would the Baritone uke make a difference? Say dude, thank you much for your time and that what I have learned from your site. Ukulele is a fine little instrument and alot easier for me than the guitar which was so cumbersome for my tiny girlie hands. May the music gods always smile upon you. And as you suggest, I practice every day. Sandi

No be inventin chords.. use my charts and do it right... be easier for you in da long haul.. you can play an 8ve higher for lower note but i wouldnt recommend it, jus take you time and learn da songs correctly... day gonna be soundin fine for you... you might wanna check ou my transposition page and learn how to transpose you songs you like... dat way you not gonna be playin da songs you like in all the same keys...patience... also my ukulele playbook... lots songs... many chords... easy and fun... or any of Jim Beloffs ukulele books are cool to have as well... and most important of all.. keep checkin my cool site for all the correct stuffs, sistah... good luck wid you. Rememba dis a journey not an instrument... enjoy
